Some 17 years ago, a prince was born in the kingdom of Casandra to King Volsung and his wife. However, born on the night of a lunar eclipse, the prince was unable to receive a lunaglyph, a blessing from Veros the moon god, and the laws of the land said that he must be exiled. Though Volsung agonized over the decision, he eventually agreed to follow the law, and the child was cast out. The queen died of grief at the loss of her firstborn soon afterwards. Bereft, Volsung fled his kingdom and sought shelter with the Empress of Halgita. Though she objected to her abandoning his people, he swore he would return if she would only grant his one request -- to remove his lunaglyph. She capitulated, but the rite had disastrous results. Volsung's body was returned to the state it had been in when he received the lunaglyph: that of a newborn child. Unable to return the king to his country in such a state, she sheltered the child, and raised it as her own. This child was known as Sigmund, as Volsung had been in his youth.

Meanwhile, Casandra fell victim to war and chaos without its rulers, and was taken over by the Order of Chains, a band of heretics who intended to chain the moon to the planet. When and wherever one of their massive chains was rooted into the ground, monsters and disease soon followed. Despite the best attempts of every nation, it seemed no human effort could destroy the chains... except for one. Although a mere unblessed, a class of people seen as having no place in battle (or indeed life), Sigmund was capable of cutting the chains. Only 15 years old, he left Halgita on a mission, after a solemn promise to the Empress to destroy every chain, and became leader of the Liberation Force.

Two years later, Capell, another young man with an incredible likeness to Sigmund came to the attention of the Force and, though initially unwilling, he joined them. The mission continued and another chain was cut, although by this time the constant stress was taking its toll on Sigmund's body. Deteriorating rapidly and resistant to the healing magic used to treat most injuries, drastic measures were needed to improve Sigmund's health. The King of Burguss, whose country Sigmund had just freed from the chains, offered to perform a lunar rite in an attempt to heal his battered body. Unaware of his own origins, Sigmund accepted. He did not remain unaware of his own origins for long. With his new lunaglyph came the memories of his life as King Volsung, and the realization that his meek look-alike was, in fact, his son; and also the loss of his ability to cut the chains, a responsibility which he now had to pass on to Capell.

Unable to carry out the Liberation Force's mission any longer, Sigmund swore to protect Capell, though he never shared the secret of their identities. Not long after, he made good on that promise, sacrificing his life atop Vesplume Tower to save his son.
